When my marriage ended, I learned that understanding your money isn’t just about dollars – it’s about having choices when it feels like your life is changing. This is especially true in times of divorce by design.
Before I became a financial advisor, I built a career, managed a household, raised a family, and did my best to make smart financial decisions.
I wasn’t always financially savvy. In my twenties, when I decided to move to Washington, DC, my mother was so concerned about whether I could afford it that I created a spreadsheet to prove to her – and probably myself – that I could make it work.
After marriage, I took on the responsibility of managing our household finances. I learned about budgeting, retirement savings, and long-term planning. During this journey, I discovered something unexpected: understanding money made me feel empowered.
I thought I knew where our family was headed. Then, when our son was five, my marriage ended.
Suddenly, I was faced with questions that left me unsettled: Could I afford to keep our home? Would my son’s life have to change? How would single parenthood affect my career? Was the settlement fair? Was I sacrificing something I would regret later? What would happen to the goals I had spent years saving toward?
Despite managing our family’s finances, I found myself wondering: Am I going to be okay?
As I navigated those decisions, I realized that financial knowledge gave me the choices I desperately needed when everything felt outside my control. This insight guided me to conduct a thorough financial analysis of my divorce situation, allowing me to make decisions with confidence.
That experience ultimately changed the direction of my career. I left the nonprofit world and became a financial advisor because I wanted other women navigating divorce to have what I needed during mine: someone who could assist them with divorce financial planning and help them understand the financial consequences of their choices before making decisions that could affect their futures.
Today, that’s exactly what I get to do. My role isn’t to dictate what a woman’s next chapter should look like. It’s to help her understand what she has, evaluate her options, grasp the long-term implications, and make decisions from a place of clarity rather than fear.
Divorce can reshape the future you thought you were building, but it doesn’t decide what happens next; you do. And I want to ensure you have the financial clarity and confidence to choose it.
